Beeswax Candles
Year after year, one of our best selling lines is our 100% pure beeswax candles made right here in Oregon. Beeswax has been used for thousands of years in jewelry production, painting, batiking, and cosmetics as well as candle making. It remains easily obtainable and versatile. Beeswax candles burn longer, are naturally aromatic (no need for artificial fragrance), sootless, hypo-allergenic and actually produce negative ions which neutralize toxins, odors and dust.
Candles add warmth to any occasion, as well as to everyday life. Our line of beeswax candles includes a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to accommodate an array of events. Beeswax birthday candles are a natural alternative to paraffin for adorning birthday cakes. Our beeswax candles are made from 100% cotton wicks. We carry Jack-o-lantern shaped candles for Halloween, trees for Christmas, and assorted figures from Teddy Bears to Buddha for home decoration. All of our beeswax tapers come in natural and assorted colors, in addition to a range of different heights. Looking for smaller candles? We carry beeswax votives and tea lights. Long burning pillars and bulk blocks for arts and crafts projects round out our inclusive line of beeswax products.
- Bees collect nectar from approximately 17,000,000 flowers to make 8 1/2 pounds of honey to make one pound of beeswax.
- Beeswax is secreted by worker bees that are 12 to 18 days old in the form of a scale the size of a pinhead. The worker bee has eight wax secreting glands under it's abdomen. It takes about 800,000 scales to make one pound of beeswax.
- The beeswax scale when first secreted is tasteless, odorless and almost colorless. Beeswax obtains it's "natural" color of light to golden yellow due to propolis and pollen collected by the bees. The distinctive fragrance of beeswax is obtained from the propolis brought into the hive, and the storage of pollen and honey in the comb.
- Beeswax has a melting point between 146 and 149º F.
- Over time, beeswax will develop a whitish coating called bloom. This is the result of softer oils rising to the surface. Rubbing with a soft cloth or warming with a hair dryer may remove bloom. Once removed, the bloom will again reappear. Bloom has no effect on the way the candle burns.
- The burning of beeswax candles produces a white rounded flame.
- For proper burning of beeswax candles trim wick to 1/4" before burning each time. Keep burning candles away from drafts. Keep the wick centered.
- When burning beeswax pillars, burn for about one hour per inch in diameter. After extinguishing the flame and the candle has cooled warm to the touch, gently mold the edges inward if needed.
- Our candles use only 100% cotton wick. No lead or metal wick is used.
- Burn candles only in a fireproof cantainer. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Some uses of beeswax are: candle making, batik, fly tying, waxing wooden windows and drawers, quilting, cosmetics, furniture polish, leather boot conditioner, marble repair, and coating cookie sheets.
