How to fertilize Tomatoes using natural and organic fertilizers

Nutrient Needs of Tomatoes

When to Fertilize

Spring - You can mix fertilizer into the planting hole, when first planting tomato starts in the ground, or when planting starts into containers.

For new 4” tomato starts, prepare transplant holes and mix 2-3 tbsp with the backfill soil for each plant. Use amended soil to fill in around the new plant and water in well. For 1 gallon tomato transplants, use ¼-½ cup per plant.

Summer -To feed established tomatoes, side dress ¼- ½ cup per plant, depending on plant size and desired growth rate, apply once each month during the growing season.

Fertilizer Schedule

Mix Down To Earth All Purpose 4-6-2 Fertilizer into the planting hole, plant and water in well.

Summer:

Side dress the tomato plants with 1/4 to 1/2 cup fertilizer per plant, using Down To Earth All Purpose 4-6-2 Fertilizer or  the Down To Earth Vegetable Garden Fertilizer 4-4-4.

Gardeners Tip...
Watering Tomatoes
Watering: There are two basic rules to keep in mind regarding watering:
1. Never water plants overhead. Moisture on the plant can lead to diseases and fruit cracking.
2. Water the surface evenly and deeply. Mulches at the base of the plant help immensely with keeping soil moisture more consistent, and as a bonus they help keep down weeds.
